Techie Review - Nokia 808 Pureview

There's a buzz in the world of cellphones lately. A monster has been unleashed.

Here comes a new camera-phone challenger! (Image credits: electricpig.co.uk)

Nokia, the premier brand of cellular phones, released a few years ago the phone that would go on to be the "top dog" in camera phones, the Nokia N8, armed with its 12-megapixel shooter with Carl-Zeiss lens. Now, Nokia is at it again, creating a phone that took the world by storm. People who thought the N8 was Nokia's best offering, are in for a huge surprise this time.

Following the footsteps of the Nokia N8, Nokia released the new 808 Pureview, branded as the "game-changer" of phones. It stomps the competition (if it had a competition, in the first place), and gives the digital SLR's a run for their money, with its 41-megapixel sensor.

Yes, you've heard it right. 41 Megapixels of glory.

I was very lucky to be one of the people who had a friend who owned the unit first here in the country, and I sat down with him for a little chat about what he has to say about the new monster phone from Nokia.

Me: What is your first impression of the 808?

Friend: My first impression when I got the unit was its robust yet the finish was of premium grade. The weight is on the "heavy" side, yet its well balanced throughout the phone. My only gripe was since my hands sweat a lot, the polycarbonate back might be slippery.

Me: Everybody is talking about the 41 MP sensor the 808 has. We're gonna talk about it later, but I'd like to know what are the major differences aside from the camera between the 808 and its predecessor, the Nokia N8?

The 41MP sensor is a first, and a thing of beauty.

Friend:  The screen is now 4" AMOLED and utilizes Nokia's ClearBlackTechnology which can be seen on previous Symbian devices like the E7. Then it runs on the latest iteration of Symbian OS, which is Nokia Belle Feature Pack 1. With the said OS coupled by a 1.3GHz single core processor, it's the fastest Symbian phone to date. But it's fluidity can't be compared to that of Samsung's Galaxy S3 or the iPhone 4S.

Me: So far, how is the experience, does it live up to its billing?

Friend: This phone focuses mainly on its hump at the back, the 41MP sensor, and it definitely lives up to the hype. I've used almost all of the best cameraphones out there but this monster is in a different league of its own. It really has closed the gap between cameraphones and point and shoot cameras or maybe "killed" the latter, haha!

Me: I know you are in possession of the phone for just a couple of days, but is it safe to say as early as now that we are looking at the future of cameraphones?

Friend: I certainly hope so. Today's market are more on the application ecosystem and their designs are more onto the slimmer side so it will take a long time for us to see this type of technology from other phone manufacturers aside from Nokia. Remember they took 5 years to develop this piece of gem. Lucky for us that Nokia will incorporate this to its Lumia lineup maybe coming by the end of the year or next year but with a smaller sensor.

Me: Is it worth every penny?

Friend: Yes it's worth every penny since I hate to bring multiple devices to cater my daily needs. For me this is my all-in-one device.

Me: If it were stolen or lost, are you going to get one again?

Friend: Of course! But I'll make sure that it will not leave my eye even for a bit, haha!

Me: Any words for everyone who wants to buy the 808?

Stylish and classy, yet strong.

Friend: If you're looking for a cameraphone or looking for an upgrade for the archaic Nokia N8, this is the phone for you without a doubt. Phone purchases are all about your preference and I hope this phone will be suffice your needs.
